BMW i8 caught speeding at 142mph on M5 near Somerset

Driver at the wheel of an £80,000 BMW i8 supercar is caught speeding down the M5 at 142mph

  • A driver behind the wheel of an electric hybrid ‘supercar’ was caught speeding down a motorway at more than double the national speed limit.

    Officers said they clocked the £85,000 BMW i8 travelling at 142mph on the M5 in Somerset on Thursday, January 20, before stopping the vehicle near to Bristol. 

    Avon and Somerset Police shared an image of the BMW on the motorway at 12.18pm, and another of it on the hard shoulder after it had been pulled over by officers. 

    The force’s Road Policing Unit slammed the motorist’s driving as ‘reckless and selfish’.

    The i8, which combines an electric motor and a turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine has a top speed of 155mph.

    Posting on Twitter, @ASPRoadSafety, officers said one in 25 drivers who passed them in the space of an hour were caught speeding at above 85mph. 

    The tweet read in full: ‘Supercar at track speeds on the M5! 

    ‘Driver detected at a speed of 142mph today in Somerset and was stopped by officers near to Bristol. 

    ‘This level of driving is both reckless and selfish – it puts lives at risk. 1 of 25 drivers caught above 85mph in an hour.’

    Avon and Somerset Police have been contacted for further comment.
