  • Burberry has been mocked over its latest ready-to-wear collection which included a backless reinvention of their classic trench coat.

In a digital show earlier this week, Italian designer Riccardo Tisci launched his Spring/Summer 22 Animal Instinct collection which featured various reimagining of the popular trench.

In his most experimental Burberry collection to date, the designer sent models down the runway wearing long vintage-style Burberry coatswhich were cropped at the back to expose their bare bottoms.

But social media users were quick to poke fun at the bizarre trench coat, with one teasing that fashion fans would be ‘very coldif they chose to get behind this new trend.

‘Burberry honey, is this a new trend we’re trying here or..???’, wrote one user.

'N Ander het gesê: ‘What was the designer of the Burberry deconstructed trench coat thinking!?? Lmaooo.

‘Riccardo deconstructing the Burberry trench coat will always be emotional for me! #Burberry22’, het 'n derde geskryf.

Paired with the coat, models were sent down the runway wearing matching collars, black leather gladiator sandals and handbags teamed with an animal-ear themed flat cap.

Several of the coats featured the cropped backs, revealing Burberry swimsuit bottoms underneath, while other variations included heavy gold chains, elaborate layering and raw hem finishes.

The revealing coats were included in a collection of cow print, leather corsets, bondage-style collars, transparent glittery cat suits and elf-style prosthetic ears.

Instead of the traditional catwalk, models walked in different spaces representing ‘natural elements at Burberry’. These included rooms themed around speakers, raves, glitter and one padded with trench coats.

Die versameling, which was dedicated to the designer’s late mother who passed away earlier this year, was launched with an off-schedule digital presentation during Fashion Month.

Typically a stalwart show of London Fashion Week, the digital catwalk took place in between the close of Milan Fashion Week and just as the Paris Fashion Week shows begin.

Last year the brand kicked off London Fashion Week with an impressive outdoor show with no audience, taking place deep in the British countryside.

'Aan my, this presentation really represents the freedom of our imaginations: how we dream to come alive,’ Tisci said in a statement.

‘I wanted to move through a series of immersive spaces, each of them unique and unexpected in their sound, texture and experience. It’s that idea of flicking between the endless realities and fantasies we have at our fingertips each day.

The designer dedicated the show to his mother, who died last month, ‘and to a journey full of new possibilities’.
