His nephew is not the only person who feared Darrell Brooks. Marsha Winters, who has known him for more than a decade, said both her mother and sister made it clear to her they didn’t like him.

‘I used to blame him on my friend. But when my mother first met him she was like ‘I don’t like him,’ and my younger sister said there’s something about him she didn’t like as well.

‘But they never told me what it was they didn’t like.

Winters, 29, said she hooked up with Brooks, who she met on the social website Mocospace, but they didn’t seriously date. She didn’t even know his real name until after the weekend deaths in Waukesha.

He left some boots and other personal effects with her but they were destroyed when the basement of her Milwaukee home was flooded in a heavy storm.

Winters said Brooks would always encourage her to succeed in life. ‘He was always cool, he used to tell me I needed to finish school and he was always saying he was proud of me.

But now she says she will not visit him in prison if he is convicted. ‘I can’t have that in my life.

When asked if she thought he had mowed down the paradegoers on purpose, 彼女は答えた: ‘You don’t know what people are capable of doing until they do it.
