That’s potty! Dropping your phone down the TOILET is top reason for insurance claim, data shows
Dropping your phone down the toilet is the most common excuse for claiming a new device, insurers reveal.
Some 739 said this was why they were making a claim, followed by 505 who left it in a taxi and 302 saying breakages were caused by dogs.
Other reasons included blaming a baby, saying the phone vibrated off a table or it fell in the bath or hot tub.
One customer even told list compiler Insurance2go that they had accidentally dropped their device into a ‘huge slurry pit on a farm’, adding: ‘No one is going after that phone, trust me.’
Insurance2go said it had received 739 claims for dropping phones down toilets, making the accident the most common way to lose your phone
Insurance2go analysed all the claims it had accepted – alongside the customers’ written account – dating back to 2017.
The number of claims involving babies came sixth in the list.
Explaining how they were getting the children ready for bed one night, a customer explained to the company: ‘I put my phone on my bedside table whilst explaining the importance of brushing teeth.
‘When I wasn’t looking, my 18-month-old son got the phone and decided to drop it into the toilet.’
Though they didn’t make the list, insects also appeared a popular explanation for breakages.
One customer told how their ‘phone fell off my leg when a spider crawled on to me’, while another said: ‘A wasp flew on me at a theme park, and I dropped my phone face down and now the top of the screen is cracked’.
