  • A homeowner has built a bird box that looks just like a speed camera to try to slow down passing drivers.

    Mike Wrathmall from Billingham, County Durham, took the drastic measure amid outrage over racing motorists.

    The 44-year-old said an added bonus was wildlife had flocked to the structure poking out over his fence.

    Mr Wrathmall created the fake camera out of wood and painted it grey and yellow to look like a traffic calming measure.

    Hy het vertel Teesside Live: ‘We have people who just go over the speed limit a little bit and then we have people who just zoom up and down.

    ‘Residents have been on for years trying to get something done but no-one’s done anything. I’m just concerned that there will be a crash one of these days.

    Hy het bygevoeg: ‘One day someone’s going to have an accident and it will be a proper accident, the speeds that they go.

    The canny move is discouraged by police but is not illegalwith some homeowners getting away with it in the past.

    But they could get done by the local council if it decides to pursue civil action if it crosses on to its land.

    Others have been in trouble with the law if they create fake speed camera signs, which are illegal.

    Mr Wrathmall said a fortunate by-product of his work was small birds had flooded to the area.

    He said he had see a number of Blue Tits around the box feeding and using it as a home.

    A Cleveland Police spokesman said: ‘We carry out ongoing community speed enforcement work and mobile speed cameras have been deployed in this area.

    ‘We are not investigating this matter as an offence but we’d always encourage people to report speeding issues to police on 101 in the first instance so we can take enforcement action.
