She has made history starring as the first Black female double-O agent with a licence to kill in the latest, long-delayed James Bond film.

And Lashana Lynch has talked about the groundbreaking role, the inspiration behind her character Nomi and how her family inspired her in the October/November 2021 issue of Rolling Stone.

Starring in a striking cover shoot, l'attrice, 33, spoke about how it is ‘imperative that we introduce the conversation of the Strong Black Woman into everything’.

In No Time To Die, which premiered on Tuesday, Nomi is given Bond’s licence to kill. Lynch isn’t the new Bond, but a new character who takes over his secret agent number after he leaves MI6.

On developing the character, the actress said: ‘I only really learned about her when me and Cary [Fukunaga, writer-director] started talking about her, so literally we created her together.

‘I had an idea, he had an idea and then Phoebe [Waller-Bridge, writer] had her ideas.

‘And as the script was being written, we kind of created this big melting pot of who she could be, what she represents in MI6, what kind of Black woman is she? Strong, whip-sharp, witty and brave, giocoso, very cheeky, very sarcastic and dry.

The Hammersmith native stars in the franchise with fellow actresses Naomie Harris, Lea Seydoux and Ana de Armas.

Lashana added she felt it was important ‘young Black girlssaw the vulnerable side to her character, not just that Nomi is a ‘superhero’.

‘I wanted to really think about the micro aggressions that Black women have to handle in these spaces and how that can manifest as anxiety, lei disse.

‘She goes home, she’s got her washing to do, she lives on her own and she’s lonely. She’s taken up this responsibility which is very awkward, very uncomfortable and it’s a lot! It’s a lot, what these people doShe’s literally risking her life every day.

And it was family who inspired her to really make the role her own. ‘I come from a family of very forward women, they don’t hold back. Their opinion is alwayspalpable,’ lei disse.

‘The women I’m surrounded with [in family and friends] remind me daily that if you’re not being treated with the utmost respect, then they’re completely disrespecting you.

'Così, if you’re seeking validation from people who aren’t respecting you as a Black woman — as the originator, the cultivator, the ‘strongone — then why are you in the room?

‘And sometimes the peaceful way of teaching someone is to just let them learn from you. So that’s what I’m doing with a lot of older white men at the moment.

‘Just watch what I, and people like me, are doing and then maybe you’ll be less confused and not have to ask so many questions. Maybe you’ll do the right thing.
