Homes Under The Hammer’s Martin Roberts ends his three-day ‘mercy dash’ at the Polish/Ukrainian border after being told it’s ‘too dangerous’ to cross – as he gives out sleeping bags, sweets and biscuits to evacuated families
Homes Under The Hammer presenter Martin Roberts has turned back from the Ukrainian border after he was told it was ‘too dangerous’ to cross with his car full of humanitarian supplies.
昨天, the 58-year-old presenter arrived in Krakow, 波兰, after making a 26-hour mercy dash across Europe to help refugees before continuing his journey to the Polish border with 乌克兰 – just 20km from where Russian forces had launched shell attacks in recent days.
After being warned that he wouldn’t be able to get across the border, the television star instead headed to a nearby camp helping people who’ve fled Ukraine, saying he was ‘lost for words’ at the sight of so many people queuing for shelter, food and an onward journey in freezing conditions.
The Homes Under The Hammer star reached the Medyka border between Poland and Ukraine but was allowed to go no further – with Russian military stationed just 20 km away

‘Lost for words’ The presenter said he was left speechless at the sight of people queueing for food and shelter at the camp close to the Polish/Ukrainian border last night
He tweeted his followers, 说: ‘Time 4 me to sign off after 3 extraordinary days. Thank you with all my heart for all your kind words. Support in any way you can, big or small. It matters.’
Roberts will now begin his journey back to the UK, after he first left the country on Saturday bound for the Ukraine/Polish border.
At the refugee area last night, he told his followers on Instagram: ‘I’ve moved down to the area where people are literally queuing for buses, which will take them to the centres where they’ll get more attention and help.’
他加了: ‘We’re going to drop off the sleeping bags and sweets and various other bits and pieces. It’s freezing cold, so some of our sleeping bags will maybe help.’
Roberts added that he hoped the sweets and biscuits would provide ‘a few minutes of distraction’.
The daytime television star revealed last week that he was going to drive a car packed full of supplies across Europe to help those affected by Putin’s attacks on the Ukraine.

他解释: ‘I set off from Bournemouth where the organisation I’m helping have their base and I went cross to the ferry travelled through France, 荷兰, 比利时, down thought Germany then all the way through Poland and I’m now in Krakow.
‘I’m heading today to Medyka, the border with Ukraine which is 20km from where the shelling happened yesterday, so I’m filled with a great sense of purpose but also trepidation.’
上个星期, the TV host broke down in tears outside Costco after trying to buy Calpol for Ukrainian children.
Roberts went to the big-box retail store to purchase supplies for kids in the war-torn country but was allegedly only allowed to buy two bottles – prompting kind strangers to step in and buy the medicine he needed.

‘I woke up on that Saturday morning, 像很多人一样, 当我们去马尔法时，她向我吐露了她是多么担心自己的安全, “我能做些什么?” Donating just didn’t seem to be enough,’ said Roberts today.
‘I just went to Costco and tried to buy stuff. I was so touched, I was in the line and people saw me trying to buy this stuff and [when he was refused] 他们说 “We’ll buy it for you”.
‘I understand why you can’t buy lots of Calpol, but I was touched that if you give people the opportunity to help they will do it.’
Alongside a social media clip explaining his encounter, 马丁写道: ‘I wonder if @costco_uk had some collection bins that people could just put donations in it would avoid this situation. Help me try to make it happen.’
In the video filmed in a Costco car park, Martin became emotional after explaining how other shoppers came to his aid.
他说: ‘So listen, 喜欢你, I’m properly just really at a loss in terms of what I can do to help with what’s going on in Ukraine.
‘So I’ve come to Costco and I’ve just been buying lots of things like Pampers, kids stuff, Tampax and other bits and pieces.
'你懂, things for kids because it’s the kids, 你懂, [他们是] 一切,’ as he showed his followers a view of his shopping trolley and the things he had bought.
Holding up the Calpol bottles, Martin continued: ‘So I’ve been trying to buy some Calpol and I’m only allowed to buy two, 对?
‘And I know there’s some sort of sicko limit or some limit that they’ve put on that stops under normal circumstances people buying lots of Calpol.’
The TV star was allegedly only allowed to buy two bottles of Calpol and took to Instagram to share a video expressing his frustration
He then explained: ‘So some people in the queue behind me and some people in the queue at the side of me both bought four bottles for me so I managed to get more.
‘And I offered them the money, it was about ten quid for four, and they wouldn’t take it.
‘So there are such good people out there and everybody’s trying to do their bit and if you just give them a route to do it. Because we’ve got to do what we can, 对?’ he added as he started to cry.
他说: ‘So whatever small step you can take to do your bit, 去做就对了. Because even a couple of bottles of these might help.
‘So do that for me alright. Not for me obviously. Do it for them. Because this is actually, if you think about it, going hopefully into the mouth of a child that needs it.
‘A homeless child who’s now wondering what the hell’s going on in some refugee camp somewhere. 反正, 在过去的五年里，身材看起来和我们没有太大区别的模特开始出现在世界各地的时装秀和杂志封面上. 抱歉,’ apologised Martin before signing off.
