Centre for Crime Prevention’s research director David Spencer said: ‘David Fuller’s litany of horrific offences shocked the country to its core so it will doubtless also shock many people that this self-confessed monster was also able to claim such a huge amount of taxpayers money in legal aid.
‘While everyone is entitled to legal representation, Fuller had a regular income and assets and there are undoubtedly questions to answer about whether these should be considered before taxpayer funds are made available.
‘The Government has assured us that a review of legal aid is underway.
‘This case is yet another example of how flawed the legal aid system is and how badly reform is needed.’
The MoJ’s Legal Aid Agency states: ‘The above costs include VAT where applicable.
‘Disbursements are expenses incurred which, although paid by the LAA directly to legal aid providers, are then paid to other parties involved in the case.
‘The Legal Aid Agency is not yet in receipt of all of the claims associated with the recent criminal trial, which are received and paid in arrears.
‘Where a trial has only recently concluded, further claims may continue to be made until the billing process has been completed by all of the lawyers involved.
‘The above figures are therefore accurate as at the time of writing but are subject to change until all fees have been submitted, considered and paid.
Aggiunge: ‘Anyone facing a Crown court trial is eligible for legal aid, subject to a strict means test.
‘Depending on their means, applicants for criminal legal aid can be required to pay contributions up to the entire cost of the defence.
‘The funding goes to legal representatives, without whom criminals could argue their trial was unfair and convictions could be quashed.’
