A psychedelic space odyssey through time: PETER HOSKIN reviews Exo One and Kid A Mnesia Exhibition

Remember the ending of 2001: 太空漫游? Not the part with the space baby. Nor with the space hotel room.

But the extended sequence just before that, as the astronaut David Bowman crosses time and space and thousands of colours stream past his eyes.

Exo One explicitly references that sequence in between each of its stages. 您, 太, as the pilot of a strange, spherical spacecraft, are crossing time and space. Thousands of colours stream past your eyes. It is very 2001 — and very trippy.

But what is the actual game? Its point seems to be momentum. You build it by rolling along the ground or diving from the air, and you release it by zooming up as planetscapes recede beneath you. There are no bad guys to fight. You just have to get from A to B.

谢天谢地, it’s very enjoyable, although it’s not nearly as perfect as, 说, the web-swinging in PlayStation’s Spider-Man games. Too often, the camera loses your craft in mid-air. Or you come to a shuddering halt against some alien scenery.

Each of the planets you use as intergalactic stepping stones in Exo One has an awesome beauty. Meteors crash into endless oceans. Dormant structures rise from lava fields.

And it all contributes to what is an incredibly poignant experience. There you are, alone at the edges of the universe, because of something that happened much closer to Earth. Just keep going.

Modern life, eh? 一些 20 years after their release, the Radiohead albums Kid A and Amnesiac have been turned into a full-on digital experience — available, for free, on certain gaming platforms.

In truth, there’s not much game here. You simply walk around a Radiohead world, full of artwork, lyrics and cartoon demons, as songs fade in and out around you.

But it’s definitely fun. Even, 我猜测, if you’re not a Radiohead fan. The sights are so wowing and the sounds so enrapturing that it’s easy to spend an hour or two in this strange, strange place.
