Spraytime! Playful elephant squirts swimming pool water in safari host’s face in astonishing close encounter at South African game lodge
This is the moment a safari host’s attempt to take a closer look at an elephant backfired – when the playful animal sprayed her with her own swimming pool water.
Lisa Saint decided to get into the infinity pool at RockFig Safari Lodge, in Hoedspruit, South Africa, when she saw a herd of elephants standing at the side of it.
When one curious mammal stuck around to play she said she was amazed to experience a ‘once in a lifetime’ encounter and was relieved it was all captured on camera.

Footage shows the elegant African elephant slurping water from a lower section of the pool as ‘mesmerised’ Lisa, from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, stands shoulder-deep with her elbows resting on the edge.

The prankster elephant locked eyes with Lisa ‘waiting for her reaction’, but she held back the urge to return the splash to avoid ‘pushing her luck’.
Lisa says she feels lucky to have experienced such a rare moment,. Neither she nor her husband Clint, a safari travel operator, had ever witnessed anything like it before.
The clip, filmed on October 15, was shared with guests at the lodge and quickly began circulating on social media – gaining millions of views without the pair even posting it themselves.

Lisa said: ‘I’ve never had an experience like that before and I probably never will again. It was amazing.
‘I’ve seen elephants that like to drink from the pool, but usually as soon as humans get in the water they move off because that’s a little too close for comfort.
‘The other elephants had walked away but this one was the curious little straggler who wanted to check me out.
‘He was looking directly at me. I wasn’t scared at all. It started drinking and that’s all I thought it was going to do.
‘He filled his trunk with water and then it looked like it was going to cool himself off, but then it pointed his trunk in my direction and sprayed me right in the face.
‘I just said thank you because I think it just wanted to play. It was one of those moments where I thought “I really hope someone is filming this”.
‘I think it wanted to see how I was going to react. If I’d have backed up quickly then I think it would have scared it off so I think because it was relaxed.
‘I was so tempted to splash it back and see what it would do but I don’t want to push my luck. Looking back I’m so glad someone caught the whole thing on camera.’
Lisa claims the curious elephant stuck around for another 40 seconds before rejoining his herd, and even watching lodge staff were ‘blown away’ by the encounter.
Lisa’ husband Clint, a South Africa-born businessman who moved to North Carolina a decade ago, said he has been visiting safari lodges since he was a child and has never seen an encounter like this
Husband Clint, who owns Live Life African Safari Getaways, was hosting one of their trips alongside Lisa when she took a group of women to RockFig Safari Lodge.
The South Africa-born businessman moved to North Carolina a decade ago and has been visiting safari lodges since he was a child and says the encounter was one of a kind.
Clint, from Durban, South Africa, said: ‘It was a really unique experience and the fact it happened to Lisa made it even cooler. I’ve never seen something like that before.
‘I was like, “wow that really just happened”. My wife just happened to be at the right place at the right time and the cheeky one decided to spray it with some water.
‘Luckily she’s been exposed to safaris a lot, so she’s quite calm in those situations so she was just taking in the moment. It was a freak situation.’
