Pornstar martini drops passion fruit in bid to go green

The end of the pornstar martini? Bar chain that sells more than a million every year dumps passion fruit from Britain’s favourite cocktail saying it is too damaging to the environment

  • Revolution Bars said it will no longer serve passion fruit with its pornstar martinis
  • It said fruit is often wasted, it adds no flavour and is not environmentally friendly
  • Company said it will serve edible rice paper with pornstar martini instead of fruit
  • The traditional pornstar martini – one of Britain’s favourite cocktails – is going green and losing its iconic passion fruit topper in exchange for something more environmentally friendly.

Revolution Bars, which has 66 venues across the UK, will no longer serve half a passion fruit on top of its pornstar martinis and instead garnish them with edible rice paper, according to the Times.

The company, which sells more than one million pornstar martinis annually, said it used half a million passion fruit a year and that they shipped them 6,000 miles from South America to the UK.

It costs the company £130,000 to ship them over and causes more than 100 tonnes of carbon emissions.

Revolution’s chief executive said the fruit added no flavour and was often wasted by customers who thought they got in the way so the decision was made to swap them out for rice paper instead.

The cocktail traditionally features a mix of vanilla vodka, fresh passion fruit, passion fruit liqueur, vanilla syrup and lime juice, plus a shot of Prosecco on the side.

The traditional pornstar martini was created by Douglas Ankrah who died earlier this year at the age of 51.

Ankrah cemented his name in cocktailing history when he created the Pornstar Martini in 2003 while working at his venue – Knightsbridge bar Townhouse.

Ankrah is said to have come up with the name after a trip to a gentlemen’s club in Cape Town, telling Master of Malt in 2019: ‘The cocktail was so sexy and looked like what a pornstar would drink.’

He added: ‘When I first made it, I had no idea it was going to be neo classic’, but he later created a  bottled version, because he was fed up of tasting badly-made versions of his tipple.

The Pornstar Martini went on to become one of the most popular cocktails on the planet and Ankrah has since launched his own line of pre-mixed Pornstar Martinis.

Since its creation, the Pornstar Martini has regularly featured in top cocktail lists and was, in August this year, revealed as the World’s most popular cocktail, based on Google search data.

The figures revealed there were more than 18.4million searches worldwide for Pornstar Martini, with the Pina Colada – top in America – ranking second with 10.5million searches and the Aperol Spritz in third with more than 8.2million registered searches.

The data also showed the UK is one of many countries where the Pornstar Martini is the most searched for and is the most sought-after cocktail in Africa.

In 2018, Marks & Spencer was accused of sexism for selling £2 ‘Porn Star Martini’ cocktails.

Shoppers and feminist campaigners claimed the high street giant was ‘normalising porn’ with its tinned version of the drink.

The supermarket giant was forced to change the name to Passion Star Martinis after a ruling against the name by alcohol watchdog The Portman Group.

Creator Ankrah insisted there is ‘nothing sexual’ about it.

‘The drink is very evocative and tantalising. I called it Pornstar because I thought it was something that a porn star would drink, there’s nothing sexual there,’ Ankrah told The Buyer in an interview in 2019.

Speaking at a Zero Carbon Forum event, Revolution Bars CEO Rob Pitcher said the decision was made to remove the passion fruit because it was often taken off by customers anyway.

He said: ‘It was simply getting in the way of enjoying their drink. People bang their noses on [them] — we fly it all the way from South America to do that.’

It is understood the savings made will go to installing energy efficient lighting and other energy saving measures.
