Roseanne Barr’s daughter Jenny reveals stark contrast between ‘prime-time-friendly’ version of her family’s life that inspired hit sitcom – and the ‘R-rated’ reality of infidelity, an illegitimate child, and drug overdoses
Roseanne Barr’s daughter Jenny Pentland has opened up about the stark contrast between the ‘parallel’ version of her family’s life that played out on her mother’s hit sitcom and their post-fame reality.
In an excerpt from her new memoir, ‘This Will Be Funny Later,’ によって公開 HuffPost, the 45-year-old detailed how the ABC series ‘Roseanne’ was based on her family, saying her mom played Roseanne Conner, ‘a prime-time friendly version of herself.’
Pentland’s father Bill was the inspiration for Roseanne’s husband Dan, while the characters of Becky, ダーリーン, and D.J. were based on her, her sister Jessica, and her little brother Jake. Jackie was inspired by Barr’s sister Geraldine.
But the comedian’s meteoric rise to fame led to a different reality behind the scenes, including infidelity, a public divorce, multiple marriages, troubled children, and an illegitimate daughter who was put up for adoption.

‘As the seasons went on and what was actually happening in our lives was increasingly rated R, a lot of things were left out, and by the end of the series it looked like a parallel-reality version of what would have happened to us had the show never existed,’ Pentland wrote.
While Roseanne and Dan stayed married, Barr divorced Bill in 1990 後 16 結婚年数. The divorce followed her affair with comedian Tom Arnold, who she married that same year.
Barr and Arnold divorced in 1994, and she was married to her third husband Ben Thomas from 1995 に 2000. 一緒, they had a son, Buck.
She also has a daughter, Brandi Brown, who was born before her first marriage and put up for adoption. When The National Enquirer found out about her secret daughter, Barr hired a private detective to find Brandi, which prompted their reunion.
Pentland explained that life in the public eye led to her and her older sister Jessica rebelling as teens, noting that ‘Becky never asked for a coffin as a bed or bought meth’ as her sibling did.
She also shared several other glimpses into the struggles that she and her siblings went through while the show was being filmed – referencing ‘cults’, ‘mental illness’, and drug overdoses.
In response to the siblings’ behavior and drug use, they were sent to multiple reform schools and psychiatric institutions until they were of legal age.

Pentland said Roseanne’s daughters Becky and Darlene were amalgams of her and her sister Jessica (彼女の3人の子供にそれを渡すことを計画していない人)
Pentland admitted she ‘resented Parallel Jenny’s simple life,’ noting that neither Becky nor Darlene suffered from PTSD or anxiety disorders from being locked up
‘Neither Becky nor Darlene had to manage a public life because of their mother’s fame. There were no crash diets as they didn’t struggle with their weight. They lived at home through their teen years, and when they sneaked boys into their house, the boys got to stay and become a part of the family,’ 彼女は書いた.
‘They suffered no PTSD or mental illness in the form of anxiety disorders. Neither of them had been indoctrinated into a cult, OD’d, or spent a year or more in a private mental health facility. They were lightweight, PG versions of us with no complicated backstories. Must be nice.’
とのインタビューで 人, Pentland said her mother and father sent them to these facilities, including a wilderness boot camp, in response to them ‘acting out’ upon the recommendation of education and behavior experts.
‘I was getting bad grades, and I was mouthy, cutting my arms, and smoking cigarettes. Just depressed,’ 彼女は思い出した, claiming Jessica was first sent to a psychiatric hospital in Los Angeles for stealing Barr’s car for a joyride.
Pentland said that she witnessed and experienced emotional and physical abuse at several of the facilities she was sent to and struggled with PTSD later.
‘I resented Parallel Jenny’s simple life. I couldn’t watch the show without feeling angry, and then I couldn’t watch it because TV was not allowed in reform school,’ she wrote in her memoir.

‘I didn’t see anything beyond the second season until I was 24 and a married housewife with a kid of my own, stuck at home and able to catch the reruns airing seemingly nonstop on Nickelodeon.
‘It still made me sad sometimes to think about what I had missed, but I had a life I wanted now, and my pain was dull enough that I could enjoy the truly excellent joke writing. I made an effort to catch up.’

Watching the show as an adult made her realize that she now related more to Dan and Roseanne than Darlene, a character who was an amalgam of her and her sister.
‘I would have a conversation with my husband, ジェフ, and then I would hear it almost verbatim from the other room, but in my mom’s voice,’ 彼女は書いた. ‘Imagine what that does to a Jewish daughter’s fear of turning into her mother.
‘I noted the similarities of the early seasons and my childhood, and I also noted the differences, which forced me to look back at the past that I had been ecstatic to leave behind.’

The ABC show’s reboot of Rosanne was canceled in May 2018, after Barr tweeted a racial slur against Valerie Jarrett, a former advisor for ex-President Barack Obama
Pentland explained that she decided to tell her side of the story ‘as a sort of cathartic, self-imposed therapy,’ saying the process of writing her book allowed her to put herself in her parents’ 靴.
‘I stopped worrying about who was to blame and started dealing with the pain of what actually happened,’ 彼女は言いました. ‘My relationship with my mom is a complicated mother-daughter relationship, but there is value to the complications in relationships.
‘Ultimately I was left with gratitude for my parents’ 愛. And that’s the message I hope readers will take away from my book: Life is complicated, but love is the most important thing.’

Barr has kept a relatively low profile over the past three years in the wake of her ABC show’s reboot being canceled in May 2018, after she tweeted a racial slur against Valerie Jarrett, a former advisor for ex-President Barack Obama.
Barr subsequently said that she was under the influence of Ambien — a sedative used to treat insomnia — and was unaware that Jarrett is Black.
The show was later replaced as The Conners, with Barr’s character killed off from an overdose.
Pentland briefly touched upon her mother’s scandal in her book going into detail about her tweets, デイリービースト 報告.
‘Her internet-trolling, name-calling, conspiracy-theory-based tweets were upsetting to people, and even though her public relations staff and the network suggested she stay off Twitter, she kept at it,’ Pentland wrote of her mother. ‘She doesn’t like being told what to do, in case we haven’t already established that.’
Pentland explained that she wasn’t surprised ABC canceled the reboot because her mother’s heart wasn’t really in it.
‘I could tell she wasn’t truly invested in the new Roseanne show,’ 彼女は言いました. ‘Most of her time was spent studying Judaism or watching true-crime programs, and this new attempt at staying relevant in an industry she didn’t much care for seemed more of a burden than a joy. She had sounded exhausted and underwhelmed any time we had talked on the phone recently.’
