‘The rape will haunt me for the rest of my life

In a victim impact statement she said: ‘I was violently raped by a stranger and I felt so bad that I could not tell my family.

‘Since then I have never been able to open up about it to anyone. I have pretended over the past 31 years that it never happened.

‘By hiding my secret it has diminished my self esteem and my mental health has deteriorated.

‘I’ve had some very dark moments. I would wake up feeling like there was a dark shadow appearing over me. I attempted to take my own life.

‘I received counselling for a while because I wanted to forget about what happened, but this made me relive it all again.

‘I put up barriers when I met a man who later became my husband. I then took part in a TV Crimewatch reconstruction, which meant I was going through this ordeal again.

한번은 그는 그 소녀의 아빠를 찌르려고 시도했고 한 소년을 무자비하게 공격하고 그의 머리를 발로 차기도 했습니다. 5 last year police knocked my door and told me that a suspect had been identified.

‘The rape will haunt me for the rest of my life. I was petrified. He was able to continue with living his life. He has destroyed mine.

‘These memories are never far from my thoughts. I knew that what happened that day made me a different person to what I had imagined.

‘I felt cheated and robbed as he evaded arrest. His actions will haunt me forever.

Police were informed and officers found her to be traumatised by the experience and highly anxious, 검사는 말했다. The woman was examined and DNA evidence was obtained.

But as Shakespeare did not have a criminal record at the time he could not be identified.

The DNA was stored and when Shakespeare offended again last year, exposing himself to a woman in a Carlisle park, the positive match was made and he was at last arrested. He had a knife with him at the time.

The rape victim, 이제 늙었다 50, was in court yesterday to witness Shakespeare’s sentencing hearing and shared a victim impact statement with the court.

Judge Michael Cullum told Shakespeare: ‘I am so relieved that this day has come for the victim. She has been denied justice for the past 30 연령, living daily with the nightmare that you inflicted on her. That nightmare does not end with sentence.

‘She knew this day would come and her remarkable faith in the criminal justice system has been born out. At least she and all women will be safe from you for a considerable period of time.

‘Today is a belated reckoning some 30 몇 년 후. Any woman would be traumatised by what your victim went through.

‘You are a rapist. It is not often however that a defendant pleads guilty to rape before trial.

‘Your physical condition means that you are unlikely to pose a threat to women when you are release from prison.

Judge Cullum sentenced Shakespeare to nine years in jail and told him he will have to sign the sex offenders register for the rest of his life.

The judge ordered forfeiture and destruction of the offensive weapon, the sharpened stick.

Following yesterday’s hearing, the victim said: ‘I would like to take this opportunity to thank and praise Gloucestershire Constabulary for their efforts in securing this conviction on my behalf and for handling my case with such professionalism at all times.

‘On the actual day of the assault, the police were quick to act with the situation and have throughout the years reassured me of their continued efforts, which has not gone amiss.

‘Gloucestershire Constabulary remained respectful of my wishes throughout the investigation and I feel it important to mention that I was never forgotten and it was taken with utmost seriousness at all times, as well as the support I received which has been commendable.

Detective Constable Simone Bowley said: ‘This was a deeply horrifying incident which happened to a teenage girl who was walking her dog on a late Sunday afternoon.

‘That young woman was immensely courageous, and her bravery since then has not wavered.

‘From day one she worked with police, and she continued to work with us when the case was reopened and reviewed over this time, in the hope that one day he would be caught.

‘I am pleased for her that this day has come and I truly hope she can now get the closure which she has deserved for all of these years.

Retired Detective Sergeant Mike Wilson, 지금 74, the officer who led the initial investigation in 1990, said the case has stayed with him even after he left the force.

그는 말했다: ‘I was involved in lots of investigations during my 31 years in the police service, but this horrendous crime always stayed in the back of my mind and never went away.

‘When I met the victim on that day she was distraught, it was heart-rending to see.

‘Despite the crucial help from the media and a huge amount of publicity, which resulted in more than 60 witness statements being taken, that day never came and a name wasn’t put forward.

‘Being told that there was finally a DNA match more than 30 years later was great news.

‘I hope that the courageous victim will find some closure in seeing the man responsible for this abhorrent crime behind bars, where he has deserved to be ever since that horrific day back in 1990.

‘The message here is that we will never give up, there is always a glimmer of hope for victims, and that people who commit such heinous crimes will continue to be sought until they are caught.
