Squid Game gets a second season! Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk confirms the hit Netflix series has been renewed: ‘You leave us no choice!’

Fans of Netflix‘s hit series Squid Game can breathe a sigh of relief after creator and director Hwang Dong-hyuk confirmed the show would be back for a second season.

Speaking at a guild screening of Squid Game on Monday in Hollywood, Hwang told the Associated Press that the show’s rabid fanbase had left him with ‘no choice’ but to get to work on a second season.

Since its release in September, the South Korean dystopian drama has gone on to be become Netflix’s most-watched series ever, toppling the previous champion Bridgerton.

Hwang stopped to talk about the series on the red carpet at the screening with Lee Jung-Jae, who stars in the series as Gi-hun.

‘So there’s been so much pressure, so much demand and so much love for a second season. So I almost feel like you leave us no choice!’ Hwang said.

‘But I will say there will indeed be a second season. It’s in my head right now. I’m in the planning process currently,’ he continued.

The creator, who also directed every episode of the series, didn’t have much to say about the direction of a second season, but confirmed that Lee would continue to be a major focus of the series.

‘I do think it’s too early to say when and how that’s going to happen. So I will promise you this,’ he said in Korean, before switching to English, ‘Gi-hun will come back, and he’ll do something for the world.’

In Squid Game, people around South Korea apply to appear on a mysterious game show offering a life-changing jackpot (around $40 million) for the winners.

After applying, Gi-hun — who is trying to clear up his debts in order to help support his daughter — is whisked away to a secret location where he and other contestants compete in variations on childhood games, but they all learn that the penalty for losing is death.

The series has been a hit both with critics and fans, who haven’t been turned off by its dark premise.

While speaking with The Times in October, Hwang suggested that a second season could focus more on the masked antagonist the Front Man, who oversees the games.

Following the success of Squid Game, Netflix added three of Hwang’s earlier films to the service to tide fans over.

In September, Hwang sounded more fatigued at the prospect of making another season of Squid Game while speaking with Variety.

‘I don’t have well developed plans for Squid Game 2. It is quite tiring just thinking about it,’ he said at the time. ‘But if I were to do it, I would certainly not do it alone. I’d consider using a writers’ room and would want multiple experienced directors.’

Earlier in the interview he shared that he was currently writing a new film, though it’s unclear if the new Squid Games news will have put it on hold.
