  • A rescue team saved 40 dogs yesterday after the entire roof of their kennel was torn off by Storm Arwen.

    Footage taken last night at Link Kennels, in Trimdon, County Durham, shows the destruction.

    Floors are waterlogged and debris is scattered everywhere at the kennels where greyhounds are trained for races.

    The inside was destroyed by the storm after it ripped off the roof.

    Blankets, dog bowls and other pieces of equipment have been dirtied by rainwater.

    They were put into temporary accommodation within thirty minutes of the trainers seeing the situation.

    Those who work at the kennels are now working to fix and clean-up the building and get a new roof fitted.

    The kennel roof was just one of the many victims of Storm Arwen which has wreaked havoc across the UK, with areas seeing snow, high winds and heavy rain.

    The forty dogs inside the kennel were all rescued and unhurt. They were put into temporary accommodation within thirty minutes of the trainers seeing the situation

    The storm has sadly claimed the lives of at least three people, who were crushed by fallen trees, including a headteacher.

    Francis Lagan, a father-of-four in his 40s, was a headteacher at St Mary’s Primary School in Londonderry.

    He was much-loved and tributes were paid to him last night.

    And another man narrowly escaped being swept away by a giant wave that engulfed Scarborough in North Yorkshire, almost becoming the fourth victim of the storm.

    Storm Arwen’s path of destruction has also led to train cancellations and power cuts across the country.

    And in Hartlepool, County Durham, dozens of holiday homes were trashed and flipped over due to the storm.

    Much of the country has seen snow and freezing temperatures caused by the storm.

    The Met Office has today issued a yellow weather warning for more snow and ice in the aftermath of Storm Arwen.
