Sir Thomas was born in Glasgow in 1848, and often helped his parents run their small shop in the Gorbals.
He eventually opened his own called Lipton’s Market in 1871, and it soon became a chain of more than 200 grocery shops across Britain by the 1880s.
Nel 1890, Sir Thomas bought a tea estate in Ceylon – now Sri Lanka. A change in processes meant that he could sell tea in his stores and globally more cheaply.
He began packaging loose tea in multiple weight options rather than in large crates, which reduced the cost of shipping.
Lipton was the first brand to sell tea leaves in tea bags, and the company is today owned by Unilever.
