What to wear this weekend: FEMAIL picks out elegant spring gingham for effortless style this season
SPRING GINGHAM
The days are longer, there’s blossom on the trees, and gingham has started to appear in our favourite High Street stores. Spring has arrived, but the profusion of this colourful check is normally enough to make me wish it hadn’t.

. . . WITH A TWIST
Usually the red-and-white is too obvious and the pale blues, yellow and pink checks too twee; you end up looking like a picnic blanket or Dorothy from The Wizard Of Oz. But this year, things are different.
Let me introduce you to grown-up gingham.
OFFICE READY
This chic make-over is thanks to British independent labels including Mother Of Pearl, Reformation and Self-Portrait, whose Spring/Summer ’22 collections are full of striking, oversized squares in classy, understated tones.
Think navy, camel and khaki. This may be the first time gingham has been sophisticated enough for a work meeting.
MIX AND MATCH
For an affordable take, head to Boden, which has this fabulous ivory and navy gingham coat with statement buttons and a structured canvas tote.
L.K. Bennett has a sophisticated black and white pencil skirt and top, which is ideal for mixing and matching. Or have fun with a bucket hat from Anthropologie. We will all be wearing them this summer, apparently.
Never say never . . .
